World-famous doctor speaks at John B. Amos Lectureship Series | News
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- Local and regional doctors got to hear from the man who revolutionized chemotherapy treatment for certain blood disorders on Monday.
Dr. Brian Druker, the world-famous medical oncologist and developer of Gleevec, spoke about his medicine that kills cancer cells without harming healthy ones.
He told doctors how they can apply this theory to other types of cancer to work towards defeating the disease as a whole.
We spoke with Arlene Harford, a cancer survivor, who explains how doctors saved her life.
"I can remember hearing the word cancer, and it just went through me, and I was treated with Gleevec 400 milligrams a day, I believe it was eight years ago, I've lost track of time, but I am in remission, in complete remission, and I just feel that Dr. Druker and Dr. Pippas have given me my life back," Harford said.
The 12:30 p.m. lecture at the CSU Riverside Theatre in Columbus was the first of its kind to be open to the public.
